Men & Care
In this workshop especially created for men, you’ll learn the basics of hand quilting and simple embroidery. Quilting is an ancient craft used all over the world. Quilts were once used as protective armour, warm clothing, blankets, and wall hangings. Practical tools designed to care for and protect people.
Because quilting is very labour intensive, it was often done in groups. People gathered to create something meaningful, quilts for weddings and births, or to pass down as valuable inheritances. Each region had its own patterns, reflecting community and connection.
While working with our hands, we’ll explore care: what it means to you, and what it means for men today. How does society treat men when it comes to giving and receiving care? Where are men’s needs overlooked, and how are mothers supported?
This workshop is part of Gossip Gathering, a research project looking at care as the foundation of society. Together, we’ll explore what holds us back from coming together now—and how making, sharing, and connecting by hand can help rebuild community.
