The Story Behind Chinese Hairsticks
Chinese hairsticks (also known as hairpins) have been used for over 2,000 years, dating back to the Qin Dynasty. Historically they were crafted from precious materials such as jade, gold, silver, ivory, bronze, bamboo, carved wood, tortoiseshell, and bone.
Beyond their decorative beauty, hairsticks held deep cultural significance. In traditional Han Chinese culture, a young woman would receive a hairpin during her coming-of-age ceremony at the age of 15, symbolising her transition into adulthood.
Hairpins also played a role in engagements. A woman would remove her hairpin and present it to her fiancé as a token of commitment. After the wedding, her husband would place the hairpin back into her hair as a symbol of their union.
Today, these elegant accessories remain closely associated with Hanfu fashion, Chinese heritage, and traditional aesthetics.
