About this event

“I think I may be the voice of my generation. Or at least a voice of a generation.”
Hannah Horvath said it in episode one of hit series Girls. Fifteen years later, it’s seems to be the guideline of all talks about the serie and it maker: Lena Dunham. And guess what? She’s coming back.
Girls returns. HBO dropped the news: Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet will star the show and will create five new episodes. Filming in 2027. Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna, all grown up. Plus: Elijah too.
But it is obvious some people are missing: Adam. And less obvious: Jenni Konner. She was the co-showrunner, and part of this very book. Coincidence? We’ll let you decide.
So obviously, we’re reading Famesick first to discuss if are excited or frown upon this return second. Let's go, girls!
How it works
We read online together. We talk offline together.
Online: for one month, our WhatsApp group is where the reading happens. We move through Famesick together, chapter by chapter, and make it to the last page within the month. First thoughts, favourite lines, hot takes and the occasional “wait, WHAT?” all go in the chat.
Offline: we close the month at one table, with The Book Review. One hour, one question: is this book worth a finish?
Plus: free entry to the Reading rave!
Joining means joining the reading. The online chat is the heart of this club, not a bonus. That’s what turns the review into a conversation between friends, not strangers.
Finishing is not required. Reading together & participation is.
The WhatsApp group opens on 1 November. The Book Review is the offline event and planned for Sunday 15 November, 14:00.
Bit of background, because what happened?!
For a while, Lena was everywhere. Golden Globes at 26, magazine covers, a book deal, 'the face of a generation'. And then, slowly, the internet turned on her. A show about four white girls in a very diverse city. A statement defending a writer on her team, that she later had to apologised for. She went from it-girl to the woman everyone loved to hate, and quietly disappeared from the spotlight.
Now she’s back. First with a bestselling memoir, now with the show that started it all. But... Is she really back? Does she deserve to be?
The book
In Famesick, Lena looks back on the ten years after she sold the pilot of Girls. Mid-twenties, writing, directing and starring in the show that made her famous overnight. Behind the red carpets, her body was falling apart. Hospital stays, years of searching for diagnoses, and a long road to recovery.
She calls it being sick twice: once from illness, once from fame. And she asks whether the dream was worth what it cost.
It’s also full of the people around her. Her parents, her creative partner on Girls, her years with Jack Antonoff, and the tension on set with Adam Driver. She doesn’t erase the controversies. She sits with them.
Frank, funny and sharp. A celebrity memoir by someone who can actually write.
So, we have questions.

Was Lena cancelled, or just criticised? Was the backlash fair? Can you love the show and still side-eye the maker? Does Girls hold up in 2026? And do we even want to see Hannah at 40?
Honestly? I want to know what you think!
