When we started Weeknights, it was a way to find social clubs in Amsterdam. That's what every post on this blog says, and for a while it was true.
But wanting to meet people isn't an Amsterdam thing. Moving to Utrecht for a new job is just as lonely. Finishing uni in Groningen and watching your friends leave is just as lonely. And the clubs that fix that, the run crews and book clubs and supper clubs, exist in every Dutch city. They were just harder to find.
So we went looking. Weeknights now has nearly 300 clubs across seven cities. Here's a taste of each.
Rotterdam
Rotterdam is our second biggest city, with over 60 clubs, and it shows. There's a bit of everything.
Saturday Basketball Club runs full court pick-up games every Saturday. Turn up, get picked, try not to embarrass yourself.
Society of Strangers is exactly what it sounds like: a room of people who don't know each other yet. Their murder mystery nights are a good excuse to talk to everyone (you have to, someone did it).
mimo sewing club runs beginner sewing classes for people who've never touched a sewing machine. You leave with a skill and, usually, a few new numbers.
LaughPlug Comedy Club and Rotterdam Board Games Group cover your low effort, high reward evenings.
Utrecht
Utrecht punches well above its size. Some of the most active clubs on Weeknights are here.
Language Café Utrecht is about to hold meeting number 831. If that's not proof that people keep coming back, I don't know what is.
Improv Utrecht runs drop-in improv lessons in English on Fridays. No experience needed, and it's very hard to stay awkward when everyone is pretending to be a lighthouse.
Blush & Bound does silent reading on Sundays. You bring a book and read it, together. Introverts, this one's for you.
Utrecht Yarn & Crafts and Run Her Way round it out, one for your hands and one for your legs.
The Hague
Knit 'n natter pairs yarn craft with beer, which is the right way to do it.
SOCCER HAGUE plays football in the park on Saturdays, and Queer Choir is worth catching live.
For the readers, The American Book Center runs a book club in English, and Vrouwen met Saus has one of its own.
Eindhoven
Common Table is a supper club built around dinner and a proper conversation. Good food, better questions.
The Friend Group Project runs a monthly friendship club. No pretending you're there for anything else, which is honestly refreshing.
And if you want to start your weekend by getting very cold with strangers, Cold Plunge Crew has you covered.
Leiden and Groningen
These two are newer, but they've got some gems.
In Leiden, Leiden Bouldering Meetup climbs every Tuesday. Bouldering is great for meeting people because you spend most of the time sitting on a mat watching each other fall off.
In Groningen, Groningen Go Game Meetup runs newcomer nights for people who've never played, and Loopgroep Groningen has the runners covered.
And Amsterdam, of course
Amsterdam is still the biggest, with over 160 clubs and something on almost every night of the week. If you're new to the city, start with our guide to the best social clubs for expats in Amsterdam, or just browse what's on.
Don't see your city?
The clubs on Weeknights exist because someone decided their city needed one. If yours feels a bit thin, that person could be you. Setting up a club takes a few minutes, and it's free.
You can see every city we're in on the Netherlands page. More are on the way.
